Welcome! A little about the Film...
North and South is BBC's rendering of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel with the same title. It was made as a TV miniseries, filmed April to July of 2004. It was originally in four hour-long episodes. A period drama set during the British industrial revolution, it starred Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe as the representatives of the different ways of life in northern and southern England during this time. The scenes in the town were mostly filmed in Edinburgh. It was not well-publicized and did not attract much critical attention. However, audience appeal was another matter. The site received so much visitor attention that the message board crashed, and fans have been loving it ever since! This was mostly due to Richard Armitage's portrayal of the surly, brooding mill owner, John Thornton. His performance in this role has earned him comparison with Colin Firth's prestigious portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice! The film won "Best Drama" in a BBC poll with Armitage and Denby-Ashe both receiving "Best Actor" awards. No surprise there! We hope you enjoy the movie and the site! Thank you for visiting!
