Summary
North and South follows the story of Margaret Hale, the daughter of an ex-clergymen. After giving up his profession, Mr. Hale moves his family to an industrial town in the north. Here, Margaret must learn to let go of the "dull, prosperous life in the south" and face the reality of her situation. She begins to see that the north has its virtues. She also witnesses a lot of suffering and class struggle. This is especially true in her relationship with Cotton Mill owner, John Thornton. He is instantly drawn to Margaret but doesn't leave her with a very good first impression of himself. In fact, she despises him for a good part of the movie. Eventually the tables turn. She learns to respect him and see his best qualities. He, through a huge misunderstanding, begins to think she's a deceitful, gratuitous young woman. Luckily, through admitting their wrongs, making helpful friends, and learning to trust, they forgive each other and are able to cultivate a beautiful relationship! After the death of Margaret's mother, father, and best friend, she is left under the care of her father's friend, Mr. Bell. He, too, is dying and, so, signs over most of his money and property to Margaret. With this money, she decides to help Mr. Thornton get his mill running again. This solidifies their relationship and makes for a fantastic ending!
